Olokun Offering (See Gallery / Photography, Celebration) - The well-known Iyalosha Felicia Omí Saidé made a great offering (ebó) to Olokun on 8 September 1999 on the coral beach just east of Havana, called the Playa de los Chivos, "Goat Beach." Her goal was, through propitiating Olokun, a grand orisha of the Creation who can set things in motion, in order to realize her dream of founding a cabildo in her barrio of Old Havana.

Tratados Enciclopedicos de Caminos de Ifa (See Store/ Bookstore/ "Collecion") - This 17 volume "Encyclopedia" is one of the most valuable, complete religious works that has ever been produced on the African religions that arrived to Cuba. The compilers have carefully reproduced unique original texts drawn from multiple babalawo notebooks for each “path” of Ifá. The texts are unique and varied. All original texts, and the resulting volumes, are subject to the rigorous supervision of elder babalawos in Regla, Guanabacoa, and Havana. The producers adhere to a careful scholarly process in order that the variant texts retain their original integrity, and, therefore, can be verified, compared, interpreted, and placed in historical context by users in their individual practices. The Tratados Enciclopedicos de Caminos de Ifa should not be confused with other commonly seen "Encyclopedias" of questionable quality that merely copy other unverified sources. ACCEPT NO IMITATIONS!

NO ACEPTE NINGUNA INMITACION.

This is authentic material, and you will be hard-pressed to find finer recordings of this nature. If you are either practitioner or student of voice and batá drum-based material looking for the perfect audio reference, look no further...this is a gold-mine. Highly recommended

NEW CD ... RAÍCES HABANERAS

David Oquendo created Raíces Habaneras to rescue and preserve the pure form and essence of Cuban rhythms, and to pass on to newer generations this aspect of Cuba’s cultural heritage.

Two Chango shrine figures (See Gallery / Art - Lukumi; Botanica), 2000, polychromed wood, plastic, clay, 14", maker unknown, Havana. Chango is conventionally known as the Yoruba Fourth Alafin (king) of the Oyo kingdom, the orisha of "fire" and "thunder," a great warrior and diviner, the owner of the bata drums, and the "director" of the Ocha initiation. "Fire" refers to "problems" (i.e., la candela! ) in Cuba, and Chango "carries" (and carries away) "problems on the head." That is why he features the double thunder axe sprouting from his crown. He is known as the loyal and indefatigable "defender" of all the children of Obatala, that is, all of the religion's priests.

Emilio Barreto Presenta: Santísimo en Ritual *EN VIVO* (See Music Store)

*NEW*

In this recording, the listener is witness to ritual music in an environment that is rarely heard outside the practice of Santería. On this disk there are two sets of consecrated drums used at various times in the recording. These drums were also used to summon seven devotees of Yemayá who were comissioned to dance for this feast. Drummers and community elders, alike, came from Cuba, Puerto Rico, California, Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago to worship beside their brothers and sisters from the New York City metropolitan area. This recording represents a unique opportunity for one to experience the natural flow of a tambor as it moves through a ritual sequence. “Santísimo En Ritual” was edited so that no pauses exist between the songs to interrupt the ceremony’s flow. From the moment you hear the first track, you become immediately aware of the trance inducing ambience unique to a live Santería feast.

Secrets of the Odus of Ifá is the First English Translation of the 256 Odu texts of Ifá. Unlike other recent translations of theYoruba Odus, this book preserves the format and content of the Lukumí System of Cuba. This extraordinary work, translated by a Cuban-American Awó of Ifá, offers an unprecedented, unique opportunity to English speaking babalawos to enrich their divination resources. It will permit, for the first time, American babalawos to have full access to the texts that have served Spanish.readers for almost once century.

Secrets of the Odus of Ifá is of the highest quality. It is printed on acid-free paper for conservation purposes. It is a solid, bound in leather.

The value of Secrets of the Odus of Ifá becomes incalculable when it is realized that it remains the only complete source for English speakers. It stands on its own for the babalawo’s divination practice, whereas recent works such as Epega and Neimark’s The Sacred Oracle of Ifá and William Bascom’s Ifá Divination represent the odus’ Yoruba “verses,” not the complete Lukumí system developed by such luminaries as Ramón Febles Obetuanilara, Bernardo Rojas Irete Untedí, Miguel Febles Odí Ká, Facundo Sevilla Ogbe Dí, Benito Rodríguez Oche Paure, and Pedro Arango in Cuba.

Do not miss this unique opportunity to own the Secrets of the Odus of Ifá in English.

These beautiful pots are hand made. Each spirit, or mpungu, of the Palo pantheon has a special “sign” that is traced on its sacred objects. Francisco combines them with the spirit’s symbols, which may be borrowed, in part, from the Lucumí orishas. The signs and the symbols are sculpted in high bas-relief and exquisitely painted.

Lucumí batá drums

(See Gallery and Store/Instruments) - Made by S. López,, February 2001. Cedar; goatskin heads and straps; lathe-turned outside; hand-opened inside. Dimensions: Iyá (13”x7.25”x28.5” left); Itótole (10”x7”x27.5” middle); Okókolo (7”x5”x20” right). López, a professional drum maker, produces batá and other traditional Afro-Cuban percussion instruments for members of the Conjunto Folklórico Nacional de Cuba, such as Olo-Elegba and Olubatá Alberto Villareal. A set of Lucumí batá consists of three hourglass-shaped drums, each of which features two apertures--the larger enú and the smaller chachá. The batá orchestra thus consists of three drummers, each of whom play with two hands—on six skins in all--along with a soloist (cantante/akpón) and a chorus. Polymetric rhythms are produced through a complex “conversation” between the largest and middle-sized drums, the Iyá and the Itótole, respectively, while the Okónkolo keeps a steady rhythm.
