Bembe for Oyá, Cabildo of Santa Teresa, Matanzas, August 1989. The Cabildo’s drumming group, Conjunto Omó Lallé plays traditional pegged bembé drums (the drummer of the caja, or largest drum, plays with one palm and one stick). The cabildo’s director, Osvaldo Cárdenas Villamíl (right center), sings to Oyá (left center), who has possessed the then octagenarian Tomasa Villamíl (in red). patchwork vests and hats for Oyá are worn by the cabildo’s male members.
