Odu Shango
Odó-Shangó (mortar for Shangó), wood, 15” x 11” diameter, nineteenth century. The mortar features low relief carving of a priest holding Shango’s thunderaxe (oshé) and thunder rattle (asheré),. as well as two larger axes against a blue background dotted in white. The large black “thunderstone” is carved of wood and nailed to the piece. Three high-relief, breast-like cones protrude from the mortar.
