J. Gonzalez Perez (b. 1949), Lungowa of Lucero Mundo and five jicaras
painted with Palo signs (firmas). The Lungowa (aka garabato)
is a hooked wood staff of a Guava branch adorned with wrappings of burlap
and colorful cloth with a tassle of rooster feathers. Gonzalez adoped this
style of adornment from his Abakua practice. The hooked staff permits Lucero
Mundo to "attract the path" he is working with and "hold on"
to it. The gourds (jicaras) are for making libations with aguardiente (strong cane rum) in order to effect different objectives. The white gourd's
sign signifies Lucero Mundo and issues of "good and evil." The gourd
second from left represents the spirit of Cuatro Vientos (Four Winds)
as it encounters Vira Mundo (the World- Turner). The third from left
refers to Ndundu, a particular nfumbe (spirit of the dead).
The fourth from left is used to salute a particular nfumbe of Gonzalez's
nganga (cauldron). The gourd closest to the lower left corner pursues
spiritual warfare between ngangas.
